Charles R. (Chuck) Howard Obituary

Charles R. Howard (Chuck), 75, departed this world on December 31, 2024 after a courageous battle with Lewy Body Dementia. Chuck was a lifelong resident of Kansas City, Missouri where he and his 2 sisters attended Southwest High School. He completed a degree in architecture at the University of Kansas and began a career in commercial design and space planning. The majority of his career was spent at George Butler Associates, and later in 2006 he founded Charles R. Howard Architect where he completed projects for several developers until he retired in 2019.

Chuck and his wife Cindy (Cynthia Porter) were married in 1974. Early in their marriage, they joined Colonial Presbyterian Church, where they found community, many opportunities for service, and most of all, a growing and deepening love for Jesus and each other.

They had 3 children and Chuck was a true baby whisperer and a loving, caring, and playful father. He attended a parenting class, “How to Really Love Your Child”, 3 times so he could keep those principles firmly in his mind, primarily the principle that “to a child, love is spelled T-I-M-E”. Chuck prioritized being present and invested in the daily lives of his children. He also demonstrated this adage by teaching Sunday School, room parenting, Boy Scout leadership, driving the bus for band trips, assisting with school yearbooks, and many others.

Chuck was a kind and thoughtful man; he maintained relationships with high school and college classmates, work colleagues, and church friends throughout his life. He was a loving son, caring for both of his parents until their deaths.

He is survived by his wife Cindy, children Christopher (Elizabeth), Carrie Genrich (Matt), Courtney Wilson (Kyle), nephew David Nelson (Sara), sister Jeannie Apel (Tom deceased) and her children Laura, Caroline, and Brett, and sister Jan Brown (Craig), grandchildren Noah, Madison, Hensley, Tegan, Olivia, Makenna and Everett, and grandchildren of the heart Lily and Garett and many others.

He will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Healing House, an organization that was near and dear to Chuck’s heart where he served on the board and provided architectural design services for several projects.

I'll miss you, Chuck.  You were always one of the nicest people I knew (like the rest of your family).  You might not have known that I wanted to be an architect too (instead of a teacher or attorney), but I was afraid that I would have been relegated to restroom and water fountain details.  I'll bet you were better than Frank Lloyd Wright who designed good-looking, but disfunctional, homes.  Peace.
