Belle Underhill, 64, Overland Park, Kan., died July 21, 2014, of cancer. Her last days on earth were made comfortable by the compassionate, caring staff of Kansas City Hospice. Belle was born Dec. 31, 1949 in Kansas City, Mo. to Jeanne Tyler Moore and Harold Underhill. She graduated from Southwest High School in Kansas City in 1967. She was married to Phil Russell Greathouse, and they later divorced. Belle attended school at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, Southwest Missouri State University and Del Mar College in Texas. She is survived by her daugter, Maggie Greathouse (Scott) Endsley and her two grandchildren, Lily and Spencer Endsley, all of Shawnee, Kan. She is also survived by her brothers, Luke Underhill, Jeff Underhill of Florida, Sam Underhill of Venezuela, and Joseph Alexander of Florida. She was predeceased by her mother, Jeanne Tyler Moore and her stepfather, Phillip W. Moore, both of Corpus Christi, Texas, and her father, Harold Underhill. At her request, there will be no services. I have very fun memories of Kay (Belle) from ages 11-14. (She went by "Kay" when I first met her, and I called her that throughout high school.) We first met each other at an Episcopal church camp in the Ozarks. We were just 6th graders having a crazy week of canoeing, running sack races, and all those fun things kids do at camp. When I moved in 7th grade and ended up at Southwest, I remember discovering Kay in the halls one day and we just started screaming and jumping up and down (as 13 year old girls tend to do!) I was so happy to find someone I knew in that big place of over a thousand strangers! We hung out quite a bit in 8th grade and I remember her kinda wild rec room parties!! (Oh My! ) Belle was always full of fun, but she was also smart-- and very introspective-- even in 8th grade! I would occasionally spend the night at her house and we'd stay up til dawn talking about heady topics (well, at least heady for 13 year olds!)
Belle also had a goofy sense of humor...she introduced me to the Smothers Brothers and we would sing their song with the line "GO CAMELS, GO!" over and over.... Or the ONE TON TOMATO song! We were just a couple of crazy girls having fun! As the years of high school moved on, we kind of went our own ways and hung out with different groups of people, but we still carried a piece of our friendship inside us. We still found times to stop and talk and catch up with each other's lives now and then.
I'm so sorry to hear about her death, but grateful for her friendship and the way she reached out to me when I came to Southwest and knew almost no one. She certainly helped ease that transition for me! She was a sweet gal.
So sorry to hear about her cancer, but thankful she was comforted by hospice workers at the end. My condolences and sympathy go out to her family and friends.
